This slide lecture presentatino examines the mysteries of the vampire in legend, film, fantasy, and fact.  Many aspects of the undead are covered, including:  the origin and history of vampire beliefs, ancient lore of blood and the restless dead, and the attraction of the vampire in literature, movies, and culture.  Various explanations of the vampire legend are considered.  Strange accounts of unearthly attacks are described, such as the vampire of Highgate Cemetery in England, and Dracula's ghost in Romania.

Martin Riccardo, director of Vampire Studies, has been lecturing on the subject for numerous libraries, bookstores, and various organizations since 1977.  In the late 1970s he published the Journal of Vampirism for two years.  In the 1980s he had two books published, The Life of the Vampire and Vampires Unearthed.  His latest book is Liquid Dreams of Vampires, a study of the vampire image in dreams and fantasies.  He has hosted several Vampire Fan Forums in the Chicagoland area and he was interviewed on the television show SIGHTINGS in 1992.

Samhain (pronounced Sow-en) represents the ancient Celtic New Year and is the first spoke on the Wheel of the Year.  This class will give you the history of this ancient holiday which is now celebrated as Halloween and tell you a bit about how it is celebrated around the world.  We will end the class with a special Samhain guided meditation to meet your loved ones on the other side.

Set up an altar in your home to honor departed loved ones and ancestors, or, if you already have such an altar, place offerings and light a candle there.
